About the Writing the City Editorial Board

Objective: Teaching Matters seeks ten highly motivated middle-school students with a strong interest in creative or non-fiction writing to serve on the Writing the City Editorial Board.

Then the Writing the City Editorial Board is for you!

Writing the City is an innovative online publishing magazine that allows classrooms from across New York City to publish their work online and to a City-wide e-Zine called Writing the City.

Teaching Matters seeks ten middle school students from grades 7 or 8 to serve on an editorial board. Students will work with professional writers to review and select the best of the all the submissions to Writing the City. Select students will write their own blog showcasing the issues teens students are publishing about on Writing the City.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in writing, journalism, creative writing, and publishing.
  • Commitment of 10 - 15 hours per month with one face to face weekend meeting.
  • Grades of A- or better in ELA classes.
  • Two strong writing samples – fiction and non-fiction, blog, webquest or others.
  • Permission of parent or guardian.
  • Access to technology, e-mail and internet access at home or after-school.
  • Ability to work independently and work well with others.
  • Excellent instinct about issues that teenagers care about and ability to write about those issues.
