Haven’t you ever wondered why us kids hate school uniforms? Well some kids don’t like them because first of all, it’s a waste of money. Also, it is ``very monotonous.” Another reason why some kids don’t like uniforms is because kids like to express themselves by what they wear each day. I, for one, am anti-uniform because I am a student at a school that has a uniform policy. Because of this, I don’t have the opportunity to express myself.
There are many reasons as to why kids don’t pay attention to the uniform policy. One reason why we think uniforms are a waste of money is that parents have to buy uniforms each year to satisfy the school their child is in. Since it’s THEIR policy, why can’t the school provide money for uniforms? This is the question schools try very hard to avoid. Also, they are very hard to find. Instead of using that money for uniforms we can use that extra money for future needs or start saving college. To prove this theory I asked one student in my class about what they think about the uniform policy. I asked Ericka Alvarez. She said ” School uniforms are the worst thing that can happen to us kids because I think we should have the right to express ourselves by wearing what we want. But I still think we should have some boundaries because I understand that they don’t want us to wear inappropriate clothing and I agree with that theory also.”
One reason why we kids think uniforms are anti-hygiene is that we have to wear the same thing over and over again for 5 days straight!!! That would mean that we would have to go wash our clothes at least twice a week!! That would make us spend a lot of money on just washing our uniforms. Also, it is very monotonous. Wearing the same thing everyday of the week. And to look around you, and see everyone looking the same. That just takes the fun surprise of the day.
The last reason why I think schools should not have uniforms is that we are not able to express ourselves. We can’t share how we feel during the day. It’s like we have our feelings trapped inside. That’s why we need to use the clothes we have already
In the United States Constitution in the first amendment it states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” (I got this information from http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.billofrights.html).
My parents always talk about how you can see the difference between schools that don’t have uniforms and schools that do. I for one disagree with this theory. Uniforms don’t change a student’s personality. School principals say that it makes us look educated but that doesn’t mean we are going to be. Since we are the kids that wear the uniforms, why can’t we decide if we can change that? That is the question….
